Mock-up for Shepherd Neame
Prepared for Lorraine Hawkins and Matt Marsh
9 September 2026 ยท one pub, nothing changed on the live site

The contact page map, today and the free version

Shown on the New Flying Horse, Wye. The left phone is the live page as it is this morning. The right phone is what the same page looks like with Google's free embed and the three links underneath.

Everything on the right phone works. Tap the map, the buttons and the address. On the left phone nothing does, which is the point.

Today

The paid Google map with every control off. A picture that costs money on each visit.

The New Flying Horse contact page today: a locked map with a black picture marker, then the words You can find us here and the address
  • The marker is a picture. Tapping it does nothing. No name, no hours, no reviews, no Directions.
  • Controls are off and the map is locked. You cannot zoom, drag or open it in Maps.
  • "You can find us here" is underlined and goes nowhere. The address is plain text.
  • Each page view loads the full Google Maps JavaScript map. That is the version Google charges for.
  • The pin comes from a stored coordinate, so it roves when that number drifts.

The free version

Google's own embed, pointed at the pub's Google listing, with Google, Apple and review links under it.

  • Google's own place card. Name, hours, rating and a Directions button, straight from the pub's Google Business Profile.
  • The pin follows the Google listing, not a stored number. Fix the listing once and every site agrees.
  • Free. Google's embed map has no per-view charge and no usage cap. The Maps API bill for these pages goes to nothing.
  • Apple Maps for the iPhone half of visitors. One tap to directions on either phone.
  • The review link opens Google's own review box for that pub. More recent reviews is what moves a pub up the local results.

The footer, same idea

Today fTAIG Facebook, TripAdvisor and Instagram. Nothing for Google, where most people find a pub.
Proposed fTAIG The same three icons, drawn the way the existing four are. Google profile, Apple Maps, Google review.

What it takes

Three fields per pubThe Google Place ID is already on every pub page. Apple Maps link and the review link come from it. NeameGraph and Yext hold all three for the managed pubs today.
One template changeSwap the JavaScript map for Google's embed pointed at the Place ID, make the address a link, and draw the three icons in the footer slot.
A nightly checkNeameGraph reads every managed pub footer and contact page overnight and shows which ones carry the links and whether the pin matches the Google listing.

Mock-up only. The map on the right uses Google's free embed by pub name and postcode for this page. On the live sites it would use the same free embed keyed by each pub's Google Place ID under Shepherd Neame's own key. Nothing on newflyinghorsewye.co.uk has been changed.
